Jim, XL 40's are scarce as hen's teeth. Here's three;

http://prevostcommunity.com/CFSinfo.asp?ID=1977
Good looking bus and priced right.

http://prevostcommunity.com/CFSinfo.asp?ID=1876
A little older but some upgrades done.

http://prevostcommunity.com/CFSinfo.asp?ID=1756
This coach may be sold but this is a great coach altho the asking price is too high. $175K is a fair price.

RE: 1997-2000 XL 40'
Thanks Chuck, the first one you listed is one that I am interested in for sure, I wonder if there is any decent support out there for a Vision conversion, outside of California in particular. The interior is a bit "out there" but I would reserve further comment on that until seeing it in person.

#2, the Liberty is real nice. I find it interesting that it is an all 12v coach, no 24v. While this sounds like a fantastic thing to an old BB guy like me, I don't know how it translates to the systems in a Prevost? Any thoughts?

Jim,
As they produce newer models, the systems continue to be upgraded with newer technologies especially the electrical/electronics.
I could do with a little less complications on my bus especially the Crestron System.

David (Sparky) can explain the advantages of the 24VDC systems better than I can. I would just say the 12v system in the '96 was obviously designed and engineered to work ok in that bus.

I know you are interested in a 40'er but unless you have a specific reason why a 45'er won't work for you, I wouldn't rule out looking at a 45' bus. As far as drivability is concerned, you would hardly see any difference compared to a 40' bus. You would be amazed at how much more usability there is in a 45' bus. Also, the marketplace is much larger and selection is much better.

Choosing a converter really depends on whether you plan to do the needed maintenance and repairs yourself or depend upon the converter and Prevost to keep your bus maintained. If you are your own mechanic, then the converter is less important to the extent that the conversion was done properly. You still have Prevost service centers to help you with the bus related issues.

I do many of the easy and simple maintenance chores on my bus but depend on Prevost and Marathon to do the heavy stuff. Marathon is my choice of converters for several reason. Their quality is first rate. They have service facilities strategically located across the country. They have 24hr emergency contacts if you need help. And they are fine people to do business with.

P.S. there's a 40' (looks like a 40'?) on EBay for sale http://www.ebay.com/itm/motorhome-Prevos...2335699999

RE: 1997-2000 XL 40'
Hi Jim,

Welcome to PrevostGurus! Smile

I pulled this off POG:
"Vision Coach's were made by the same folks that made Pacific Coach's. I think they are now Premier. I understand they had some legal issues causing them to change names. I have also heard that some of the original people who had coach's made by these folks were also part owners. I have owned a 1995 45' Vision for several years, and am well pleased with it. They were the first converter to use solid granite for flooring, some counter tops, ect. Lots of features I enjoy is the construction methods used (solid interior doors, sewer dumps on both sides, curved dash, louvered and vent fans in the battery/inverter bay door, large volume tanks, ie 200 gal fresh water, ect) It does not have bus air, but does have 4 roof top A/C's."

That's about all I can find on Vision coaches. I'm sure they're a perfectly fine converter; after all, the Prevost chassis is what we're all really after.

I think most of the 40 footers were done by California converters and most of those converters are probably now out of business. To me an orphan converter isn't an issue as long as schematics and documentation are available. That'd be my first question. I like to work on my house electrics. I don't want to get wrapped up into a converter's proprietary house control system, so full house electric schematics are important to me.

There was a downscale Liberty, I guess it was the Classic. The Elegant Lady has the 24V house system. As you know all prevost's have a 24V chassis system. With a 24V house system about the only thing that runs on 24V is the inverters but inverter efficiency is much better at 24v than it is a 12V plus the converters can downsize the wire a notch or two from say 4/0 to 2/0.

Sparky, eh? I like it! Smile

Thanks Chuck, and thanks Sparky Dodgy that explanation of the 24v system really clears up my confusion on that issue, didn't know that it was that simple.

Looks like my search will be limited to Liberty and Marathon, seems like those are the only two converters whose pre 2004 coaches are on the admissible list for importation into Canada!!

RE: 1997-2000 XL 40'
Jim, I take it that's 2004 chassis year (as opposed to converter registered year)? As you know, I imported my 2004 Vantare H3, 2003 chassis year, from Kamloops, BC. US Customs considered it a re-importation of a US vehicle; but, someone at some point imported it into Canada. In the US we have a long history of grandfathering in vehicles and such that meet old rules and standards when new rules are mandated. Not so in Canada I take it.
